How the statistical significance calculator works:

Step 1: Calculate Conversion Rates

At its core, an A/B test compares two conversion rates:

Conversion Rate = (Number of Conversions) ÷ (Number of Visitors)
  • If you spent $1,000 on Instagram (paid social marketing) and got 50 sign‑ups, your rate is 50 ÷ 1,000 = 5%.
  • If you spent $1,000 on LinkedIn (paid social marketing) and got 60 sign‑ups, that’s 6%.

We label these rates as p₁ (Variation A) and p₂ (Variation B).

Step 2: Pooling the Results

Because each ad sees different sample sizes (say 10,000 vs. 12,000 clicks), we “pool” the data to estimate the overall baseline rate p₀:

p₀ = (Conversions₁ + Conversions₂) ÷ (Visitors₁ + Visitors₂)

This pooled rate captures your combined conversion performance across both paid search marketing campaigns. It serves as our best guess for the true underlying conversion probability if there were no real difference.

Step 3: Compute the Standard Error

Next, we measure how much “wiggle room” to expect in those rates due to random chance. That’s the standard error (SE) for the difference of two proportions:

SE = √[ p₀ × (1–p₀) × (1/Visitors₁ + 1/Visitors₂) ]
  • A smaller SE means more precise results—typical when you have lots of clicks (e.g., big paid search budgets).
  • A larger SE means more fluctuation—common in smaller paid social tests.

Step 4: Calculate the Z‑Score

The z‑score tells you how many standard‑error units the difference between p₂ and p₁ represents:

z = (p₂ – p₁) ÷ SE
  • A positive z means B beats A; a negative z means A beats B.
  • The magnitude of z shows how extreme the observed difference is relative to random variation.

Step 5: From Z to Confidence

Finally, we convert z into a one‑tailed p‑value, then into a confidence percentage:

  1. p‑value = probability of seeing a difference at least as large as the one observed, if in reality there is no true difference.
  2. Confidence = (1 – p‑value) × 100%.

In marketing terms: a 95% confidence means that in 95 out of 100 similar tests, you’d see Variation B outperform Variation A by at least this much—if the true uplift is zero, that would happen by chance only 5% of the time.

Step 6: Measuring Improvement

Alongside confidence, we report the relative improvement:

Improvement % = [(p₂ ÷ p₁) – 1] × 100%

This tells you, for example, that your new paid search ad (B) is converting 20% better than your control (A).
